Krypton Krypton is a chemical element with an atomic number of 36. Its symbol is Kr and its name comes from the Greek word kryptos , which means hidden. It was first discovered in 1898 by Sir William Ramsay and Morris Travers. Ramsay and Travers took a sample of air from the atmosphere, liquified it (through cooling) and then evaporated it, isolating Krypton from what was left. This work contributed to the creation of a new column in the periodic table, created for noble gases, and for Ramsay winning the Nobel Prize in 1904. Krypton is one of the most scarce elements in the Earth’s atmosphere, occurring at only 1 part per million (Nitrogen, which makes up 78% of the atmosphere, occurs at 780,000 parts per million). In gas form, krypton is colorless and odorless. As a solid, it appears white and has a cubic crystal structure.
